Acting/Theatre Arts Classes for Kids Teens and Adults:

 

Music Box Theatre: An Introduction to Musical Theatre (ages 5-7)

 

Instructor: Natasha Fenster

Tuesdays, 4:30pm to 5:45pm

Using song and movement as storytelling tools, students learn the basics of musical theatre performance as they prepare and perform a mini-musical for an invited audience on the final class! As an ensemble, they will learn stage direction, vocalization exercises and most importantly, how music can help to move or drive a story. All students must be available for the showcase performance on the final date, which – barring any weather or emergency cancelations – is March 13. Any weather or emergency cancelations will result in the scheduling of our make-up dates as needed (March 20 and 27) Students must be available for make-up dates should they be needed.

Enchanted Entertainers (ages 5-7)

Thursdays, 4:30pm to 5:45pm

In this drama class, students will be introduced to a genre of children’s literature such as; fractured fairy tales, Aesop’s fables, fiction and non-fiction stories that will be use to teach educational lessons. Together with their instructor, they will develop their own stage adaptation of these tales that will include acting, movement and music! At the end of this course the students will present this performance for an invited audience. This acting class promises to be fun, exciting and memorable. Students will leave this class with a better understanding of basic performance skills. All students must be available for the showcase performance on the final date, which – barring any weather or emergency cancelations – is March 8. Any weather or emergency cancelations will result in the scheduling of our make-up dates as needed (March 15 and 22) Students must be available for make-up dates should they be needed.

Budding Actor’s Workshop (ages 5-7)

A variety pack of acting tools and techniques for budding, young talents including improv, scripted scenes and sketches, TV and film acting and more! Build confidence, presentation, social and public speaking skills. A performance showcase on our final date is optional. As this is primarily a skill-building class, students should not feel pressure to perform, but can if the class so decides.

Broadway Melodies (ages 8-10)

Mondays, 4:30pm to 5:45pm

*No class 2/19 due to President’s Day – all public schools closed.

A “triple threat” on Broadway is a performer who can sing, act and move well: music, movement and motivation work together in any musical number to tell the story. Harness these elements and build strong vocal and performance skills as we examine the best of Broadway! Students will learn how to not only sing a musical number, but explore musical staging, stage directions, how to act a song and most importantly how to blend and work together creatively as an ensemble. Acting games and exercises will also be incorporated into the curriculum. The session will culminate in an informal showcase on the final date.  All students must be available for this showcase, which – barring any weather or emergency cancelations – is March 19. Any weather or emergency cancelations will result in the scheduling of our make-up dates as needed (March 26 and April 2) Students must be available for make-up dates should they be needed.

On the Spot: Comedy and Improv for Kids (ages 8-10)

Laughter is something we can all share and enjoy! In this eight-week workshop, young actors will learn how to tap into their own creative ideas and instincts as they explore improv, sketches, physical comedy, parody and joke-telling! They’ll also build confidence and teamwork skills as they learn to trust in themselves and their fellow actors. A performance showcase on our final date is optional. As this is primarily a skill-building class, students should not feel pressure to perform, but can if the class so decides.

Let’s Put On a Show (ages 8-10)

Challenge your creativity by putting on your own show! In this eight-week workshop, students will learn the process of creative collaboration as they develop their own performance piece to be presented to an audience of family and friends on the final class. Students will work (in accordance with a carefully-planned outline) on developing characters and providing creative contributions to their script. All students must be available for this showcase, which – barring any weather or emergency cancelations – is March 10. Any weather or emergency cancelations will result in the scheduling of our make-up dates as needed (March 17 and 24) Students must be available for make-up dates should they be needed.

 Kids On-Camera (ages 11-13)

Wednesdays, 5:45pm to 7:00pm

Different than on-stage acting, acting on screen is very intimate, and the camera picks up every detail. Learn how to best present yourself on screen and explore auditions, commercials, scenes for TV and film using actual, network and professional scripts. You’ll also pick up useful tips on how to book professional work and industry tricks of the trade!

Broadway Bound (ages 11-13)

Thursdays, 5:00pm to 6:30pm

This intensive study in musical performance will offer students opportunities for solo work, duets, trios and other small-group features. They’ll explore selections from some of Broadway and Off-Broadway’s best to find two new audition songs (an up-tempo and ballad) to add to their audition repertoire. The class will culminate in a very informal showcase on the final date, which – barring any weather or emergency cancellations – is March 8. Any weather or emergency cancelations will result in the scheduling of our make-up dates as needed (March 15 and 22) Students must be available for make-up dates should they be needed.

Between the Lines: Scene and Monologue Study for Teens (ages 14 to 16)

This class will focus on monologues and scene work, whether in a performance or audition situation. Learn how to find clues in the text that relate to character objectives and obstacles, inspire character-driven choices and lead you to a more truthful performance.  Students are welcome and encouraged to bring in any monologues or scenes they’ve been working on or experimenting with.

With a Song In My Heart: Adult Song Workshop (ages 17 and up)

Sharpen vocal technique as you also delve into character choices and story-telling within a song. This intimate classroom environment offers opportunity to explore Broadway show-tunes and standards that can be used for either a cabaret-performance situation or to build onto your audition repertoire.

Impulsive Behavior: Adult Improv (ages 17 and up)

Wednesdays 7:00pm to 8:30pm

Improv is unscripted, allowing artists to draw from their own instincts, shed inhibitions, build personal ease and confidence onstage, and develop trust among fellow performers. These skills also apply to social, business, interview/audition and presentation situations. Strengthen your creative reflexes in this eight-week workshop through a series of theatre games, impromptu scenarios, and character and team-building exercises.

Registration: $275 for all eight weeks (10% off all eight-week registrations made by December 31, 2017) or register at a drop-in rate of $37.50 per class.
