Theatre Arts Classes for Ages 5-7:

Music Box Theatre: An Introduction to Musical Theatre (ages 5-7) 

  

Instructor: Natasha Fenster

Tuesdays, 4:30pm to 5:45pm

Using song and movement as storytelling tools, students learn the basics of musical theatre performance as they prepare and perform a mini-musical for an invited audience on the final class! As an ensemble, they will learn stage direction, vocalization exercises and most importantly, how music can help to move or drive a story. All students must be available for the showcase performance on the final date, which is June 11, 2019.

Enchanted Entertainers (ages 5-7) 

  

Instructor: Donnie Moody

Thursdays, 4:30pm to 5:45pm

In this drama class, students will be introduced to a genre of children’s literature such as; fractured fairy tales, Aesop’s fables, fiction and non-fiction stories that will be use to teach educational lessons. Together with their instructor, they will develop their own stage adaptation of these tales that will include acting, movement and music! At the end of this course the students will present this performance for an invited audience. This acting class promises to be fun, exciting and memorable. Students will leave this class with a better understanding of basic performance skills. All students must be available for the showcase performance on the final date, June 13, 2019.

Budding Actor’s Workshop (ages 5-7): THIS CLASS IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE.

This no-pressure class environment allows students to explore a variety pack of acting tools and techniques for budding young talents including improv, scripted scenes and sketches, on-camera scenes and commercials, without the pressure of putting on a performance! Build confidence, presentation, social and public speaking skills. We give the class the option of putting together a showcase of highlights for family and friends, but if they decide not, video highlights can be posted to a private YouTube channel where parents can login and view.

Broadway Melodies (ages 8-10)

 

Instructors: Jonathan Cahr and Ruth Lettera

Mondays, 4:30pm to 5:45pm

Musical theatre requires performers to not only sing but to act a song as well. Movement and motivation work together in any musical number to help tell the story. Harness these elements and build strong vocal and performance skills as we examine the best of Broadway! Students will learn how to not only sing a musical number, but explore musical staging, stage directions, how to act a song and most importantly how to blend and work together creatively as an ensemble. Acting games and exercises will also be incorporated into the curriculum. The session will culminate in an informal showcase on the final date.  All students must be available for this showcase, which, barring any weather or emergency cancellations is June 17, 2019.

On the Spot: Comedy and Improv for Kids (ages 8-10)

Laughter is something we can all share and enjoy! In this eight-week, no-pressure, workshop, young actors will tap into their own creative ideas and instincts as they explore improv, sketches, physical comedy, parody and joke-telling! They’ll build confidence and teamwork skills as they learn to trust in themselves and their fellow actors, and recognize the difference between appropriate and inappropriate humor. We give the class the option of putting together a showcase of highlights for family and friends, but if they decide not, video highlights can be posted to a private YouTube channel where parents can login and view.

Let’s Put On a Show (ages 7-10)

Saturdays, 12:00pm to 2:00pm

Challenge your creativity by putting together your own show! In this eight-week workshop, students will learn the process of creative collaboration as they develop a performance piece to be presented to an audience of family and friends on the final class. Under a carefully-planned outline, students will develop characters and provide creative contributions to their script. All students must be available for the showcase, June 22.

If you’ve got a talent (and a love) for making people laugh, this eight-week workshop is for you! Sharpen your timing, heighten your instincts, develop your own comedic characters and ideas as you explore improv, sketch, physical comedy, parody and stand-up. A performance showcase on our final date is optional. As this is primarily a skill-building class, students should not feel pressure to perform, but can if the class so decides.

Broadway Bound (ages 11-13)

 

Instructors: Jonathan Cahr and Brian Bianco

Thursdays, 5:00pm to 6:30pm

This intensive study in musical performance offers students opportunities for solo work, duets, trios and other small-group features. They’ll explore selections from some of Broadway and Off-Broadway’s best to find two new audition songs (an up-tempo and ballad) to add to their audition repertoire. The class will culminate in a very informal showcase on the final date, which is June 13, 2019.

Acting for the camera comes closer to reality than acting on stage and requires its own, unique set of skills. In this eight-week workshop, you’ll build the basic skills necessary to act and audition for television, film and commercials using actual network and film scripts. Explore how body and facial gestures convey important information to a viewing audience and how the camera lens can become your best friend. You’ll also receive tips for finding agents and booking professional work.

Registration: $275 for all eight-weeksor register on a drop-in basis for $38 per class.

Improv is unscripted, allowing artists to draw from their own instincts, shed inhibitions, build personal ease and confidence onstage, and develop trust among fellow performers. These skills also apply to social, business, interview/audition and presentation situations. Strengthen your creative reflexes in this eight-week workshop through a series of theatre games, impromptu scenarios, and character and team-building exercises.

Registration: $275 for all eight weeks  or register at a drop-in rate of $38.00 per class.

 

Between the Lines: Scene Study for Adults (ages 16 and up): 

Instructor: Carole Claps

Mondays, 7:00pm to 8:30pm

Anyone can memorize lines, but an actor has to bring the character to life through “truth.” Learn how to find clues in the text that relate to who your character is as a person, his or her objectives and obstacles, and make character-driven choices that lead you to a more truthful performance.
