Music Box Theatre: An Introduction to Musical Theatre (ages 5-7)

Instructor: Natasha Fenster

Tuesdays, 4:30pm to 5:45pm

NO Class 10/1 for Rosh Hashanah and 11/5 for Election Day

Using song and movement as storytelling tools, students learn the basics of musical theatre performance as they prepare and perform a mini-musical for an invited audience on the final class! As an ensemble, they will learn stage direction, vocalization exercises and most importantly, how music can help to move or drive a story. All students must be available for the showcase performance on the final date, which is November 19, 2019.

Enchanted Entertainers (ages 5-7)

NO Class 10/31 for Halloween

In this drama class, students will draw inspiration from fractured fairytales, fables and other stories from children’s literature that will be use to teach educational lessons. Together with their instructor, they will develop their own stage adaptation of these tales focusing on script-acting and movement. At the end of this course the students will present this performance for an invited audience. This acting class promises to be fun, exciting and memorable. Students will leave this class with a better understanding of basic performance skills. All students must be available for the showcase performance on the final date, November 14, 2019.

Budding Actors Workshop (ages 5-7)

Saturdays, 9:15am to 10:30am

NO Class 10/12 for Columbus Day Weekend and 11/9 for Veteran’s Day Weekend.

This no-pressure class environment allows students to explore a variety pack of acting tools and techniques for budding young talents including improv, scripted scenes and sketches, on-camera scenes and commercials. Build confidence, presentation, social and public speaking skills. A performance showcase on our final date, November 16, 2019 is optional. As this is primarily a skill-building class, students should not feel pressure to perform, but can if the class so decides.

Musical theatre requires performers to not only sing but to act a song as well. Movement and motivation work together in any musical number to help tell the story. Harness these elements and build strong vocal and performance skills as we examine the best of Broadway! Students will learn how to not only sing a musical number, but explore musical staging, stage directions, how to act a song and most importantly how to blend and work together creatively as an ensemble. Acting games and exercises will also be incorporated into the curriculum. The session will culminate in an informal showcase on the final date.  All students must be available for this showcase, which is November 25, 2019.

On the Spot: Comedy and Improv for Kids (ages 8-10)

Laughter is something we can all share and enjoy! In this eight-week, no-pressure, workshop, young actors will tap into their own creative ideas and instincts as they explore improv, sketches, physical comedy, parody and joke-telling! They’ll build confidence and teamwork skills as they learn to trust in themselves and their fellow actors, and recognize the difference between appropriate and inappropriate humor. A performance showcase on our final date, November 13, 2019 is optional. As this is primarily a skill-building class, students should not feel pressure to perform, but can if the class so decides.

Different than on-stage acting, acting on screen is very intimate, and the camera picks up every detail. Learn how to best present yourself on-camera and explore auditions, commercials, scenes for TV and film using actual, network and professional scripts. You’ll also pick up useful tips on how to book professional work and industry tricks of the trade! Highlights from the class will be loaded onto a private YouTube Channel for parents to view and for students to download their work.

Broadway Bound (ages 11-13)

This intensive study in musical performance offers students opportunities for solo work, duets, trios and other small-group features. They’ll explore selections from some of Broadway and Off-Broadway’s best to find two new audition songs (an up-tempo and ballad) to add to their audition repertoire. The class will culminate in a very informal showcase on the final date, which is November 14, 2019.

Acting for the camera comes closer to reality than acting on stage and requires its own, unique set of skills. In this eight-week workshop, you’ll build the basic skills necessary to act and audition for television, film and commercials using actual network and film scripts. Explore how body and facial gestures convey important information to a viewing audience and how the camera lens can become your best friend. You’ll also receive tips for finding agents and booking professional work.

Scenes for Teens (ages 13-15)

Anyone can memorize lines, but an actor has to bring the character to life through “truth.” Learn how to find clues in the text that relate to who your character is as a person, his or her objectives and obstacles, and make character-driven choices that lead you to a more truthful performance.
