Summer Youth Programs

Curtain Call offers two different summer programs for youth: our Summerstock and Summerstock Junior program, which is a full-day, conservatory-style workshop program for ages six thru sixteen, and our Summer Youth Theatre which produces a full-scale musical production each summer featuring performers and technicians grade four thru age twenty-one. Scroll down below our calendar for information on each.

Summerstock Full-Day Workshops:

Our SUMMERSTOCK (ages 11 to 16) and SUMMERSTOCK JUNIOR (ages 6 to 11) programs are full-day, theatre arts workshops. No previous experience is required and registration is on a first come, first serve basis. Each session culminates in a showcase performance on the final date (see descriptions below for specific dates and times). Each program session is two weeks. There is NO registration for just one week of the program. Students must be available for both weeks of any session and its performance showcase.

The maximum number of students accepted for each two-week session is forty (40). Students are grouped according to their date of birth and will rotate throughout the day in these age-appropriate groups between experienced teaching artists for specialized instruction. Our staff consists of three (3), specialized instructors, our program director, a program assistant and three (3) to six (6) classroom assistants.

Students should bring a lunch each day. Refrigerators and microwave ovens are available for use at the theatre complex. There is no food service or transportation provided. We also have access to the playground on the Sterling Farms Complex for outdoor activities.

Discounts are available for siblings (10% off for each additional child). Scholarships and payment plans are also available for families in need. (See the sidebar to your right for scholarship application requirements or call 203-329-8207 x16.)

Please inform us of any allergies, special needs, conditions or medications.

There are four, separate Summerstock program sessions:

SUMMERSTOCK CREATIVE THEATRE FOR AGES 11-16:

June 25, 26, 27, 28, 29 and July 2, 3, 5, 6, 2018 from 9:30am to 4:30pm (NO class July 4, 2018) with a showcase performance July 6, 2018 at 7:00pm.

Through rotating study in Improv, Shakespeare and Modern Acting in age-appropriate groups (5th and 6th grade, 7th and 8th grade, high school), students will tap into their own creativity to assemble a showcase performance on the final date drawing upon the instincts, teamwork and timing built in Improv, the technique and discipline developed in Modern Acting and the power tapped through Shakespeare’s language. Students will explore scene work for stage and screen as well as develop original scenes and sketches, including their own conceptual Shakespeare scenes drawing dialogue from the sonnets. Showcase performance is July 6, 2018 at 7:00pm.

Registration is $750 ($675 for each additional sibling after the first child).

Our 2018 summer production will be

Music by Charles Strouse, lyrics by Lee Adams and book by Michael Stewart

Bye, Bye, Birdie is America’s first rock and roll musical and received the 1961 Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Direction and Best Choreography of a Musical (both to Gower Champion), and Best Featured Actor in a Musical (Paul Lynde).

It is 1960, and America’s teens are swept away by the rock and roll craze, but their idol and heartthrob Conrad Birdie has been drafted to serve in the US Army, leaving many teenage girls beside themselves with grief, not to mention Almaelou Music Corporation (Conrad’s recording label) in a panic! Almaelou co-owner and Conrad’s manager, Albert Peterson, along with his faithful girlfriend and secretary, Rose Alvarez have a plan on how they can give Conrad a proper send-off and still keep teens clambering for more: Conrad Birdie will give one of his adoring, female fans one, last kiss goodbye on the Ed Sullivan show with millions of Americans watching!

Randomly yet fatefully selected for this kiss is 15 year-old Kim MacAfee from Sweet Apple, Ohio – president of the Conrad Birdie fan club. But Kim has just been “pinned” to her steady boyfriend, Hugo Peabody. Can their relationship survive this test? Will the wholesome town of Sweet Apple survive Conrad’s hip-swiveling, degenerative influence? Will the MacAfees survive their home being turned upside-down while Conrad, Albert and Rose stay with them until the broadcast? And when Albert’s domineering and disapproving mother shows up, will Albert and Rosie survive each other?

Performances will take place in August: specific dates are TBA. Information on auditions and sign-ups for stage crew will be posted as soon as they’re available. DETAILS STILL TO COME.
