Learn how to use your voice to affect listeners in a deeply emotional way. Drawing from the teachings of Fitzmaurice, Linklater, Knight-Thompson, Barrantes and London's Jilly Bond, you’ll learn how to feel comfortable and confident in your vocal performance, how to keep a listening audience engaged, and hone and sharpen technique in speech, diction, relaxation and breath work. Vocal warmup exercises will be used to build vocal range and dexterity. The class will address accents, bad speech habits, and lack of breathing technique. We will practice with actual commercial scripts and learn how to edit your own demo tape for an exciting career in voiceovers! (For this class, you will need an independent microphone - separate from your computer. Here are links to some inexpensive models: Lavalier Lapel Omnidirectional Microphone and Recording Microphone with Stand.)

Learn how to analyze text to find character objectives, obstacles and tactics, beats that define a shift in energy, intensity or tactic, and how to determine the pace and rhythm set by the playwright. Students will develop characters through physical and internal exercises while also building stage speaking skills to achieve strong diction, emotional emphasis, clarity and vocal projection. They will examine and develop monologues that they can use for auditions and drama competitions or just to sharpen their technique and creativity. Students are welcome to bring in a piece of text they’d like to work on if they have something already in mind. Classes will meet using Zoom. Class materials and recordings of student work will be posted through a Google Classroom.
