Theatre Arts Classes for Ages 5-7:

Music Box Theatre: An Introduction to Musical Theatre (ages 5-7)

Using song and movement as storytelling tools, students learn the basics of musical theatre performance as they prepare and perform a mini-musical for an invited audience on the final class! As an ensemble, they will learn stage direction, vocalization exercises and most importantly, how music can help to move or drive a story. All students must be available for the showcase performance on the final date, which is March 5, 2019. (Should any class be cancelled due to weather or emergency, our showcase performance will be pushed to the first available make-up date listed above.)

Budding Actor’s Workshop (ages 5-7)

This no-pressure class environment allows students to explore a variety pack of acting tools and techniques for budding young talents including improv, scripted scenes and sketches, on-camera scenes and commercials, without the pressure of putting on a performance! Build confidence, presentation, social and public speaking skills. We give the class the option of putting together a showcase of highlights for family and friends, but if they decide not, video highlights can be posted to a private YouTube channel where parents can login and view.

Enchanted Entertainers (ages 5-7)

In this drama class, students will be introduced to a genre of children’s literature such as; fractured fairy tales, Aesop’s fables, fiction and non-fiction stories that will be use to teach educational lessons. Together with their instructor, they will develop their own stage adaptation of these tales that will include acting, movement and music! At the end of this course the students will present this performance for an invited audience. This acting class promises to be fun, exciting and memorable. Students will leave this class with a better understanding of basic performance skills. All students must be available for the showcase performance on the final date, which is March 7, 2019. (Should any class be cancelled due to weather or emergency, our showcase performance will be pushed to the first available make-up date listed above.)

A “triple threat” on Broadway is a performer who can sing, act and move well: music, movement and motivation work together in any musical number to tell the story. Harness these elements and build strong vocal and performance skills as we examine the best of Broadway! Students will learn how to not only sing a musical number, but explore musical staging, stage directions, how to act a song and most importantly how to blend and work together creatively as an ensemble. Acting games and exercises will also be incorporated into the curriculum. The session will culminate in an informal showcase on the final date.  All students must be available for this showcase, which, barring any weather or emergency cancellations is March 11, 2019.  (Should any class be cancelled due to weather or emergency, our showcase performance will be pushed to the first available make-up date listed above.)

On the Spot: Comedy and Improv for Kids (ages 8-10)

Laughter is something we can all share and enjoy! In this eight-week, no-pressure, workshop, young actors will tap into their own creative ideas and instincts as they explore improv, sketches, physical comedy, parody and joke-telling! They’ll build confidence and teamwork skills as they learn to trust in themselves and their fellow actors, and recognize the difference between appropriate and inappropriate humor. Learn how to best present yourself on-camera and explore auditions, commercials, scenes for TV and film using actual, network and professional scripts. You’ll also pick up useful tips on how to book professional work and industry tricks of the trade! Highlights from the class will be loaded onto a private YouTube Channel for parents to view and for students to download their work.

Let’s Put On a Comedy Show (ages 11-13)

If you love improv, telling jokes and creating comedic characters, this class is for you! Students will explore three, essential forms of comedy: improv, stand-up and sketch comedy and draw upon their creative instincts, self-confidence and sense of teamwork to assemble their own 20 to 30 minute comedy show to be performed on the final class for an invited audience! Broadway Bound (ages 11-13)

This intensive study in musical performance will offer students opportunities for solo work, duets, trios and other small-group features. They’ll explore selections from some of Broadway and Off-Broadway’s best to find two new audition songs (an up-tempo and ballad) to add to their audition repertoire. The class will culminate in a very informal showcase on the final date, which is February 28, 2019. (Should any class be cancelled due to weather or emergency, our showcase performance will be pushed to the first available make-up date listed above.)

Improv is unscripted, allowing artists to draw from their own instincts, shed inhibitions, build personal ease and confidence onstage, and develop trust among fellow performers. These skills also apply to social, business, interview/audition and presentation situations. Strengthen your creative reflexes in this eight-week workshop through a series of theatre games, impromptu scenarios, and character and team-building exercises.

Anyone can memorize lines, but an actor has to bring the character to life through “truth.” Learn how to find clues in the text that relate to who your character is as a person, his or her objectives and obstacles, and make character-driven choices that lead you to a more truthful performance.
