Music Box Theatre: an Introduction to Musical Theatre (ages 5-7)

Instructor: Natasha Fenster

Tuesdays, 4:30pm to 5:45pm

Using song and movement as storytelling tools, students learn the basics of musical theatre performance as they prepare and perform a mini-musical for an invited audience on the final class! As an ensemble, they will learn stage direction, vocalization exercises and most importantly, how music can help to move or drive a story. All students must be available for this showcase, which – barring any weather or emergency cancellations – is March 10, 2020. Any weather or emergency cancellations will result in the scheduling of our make-up dates as needed (March 17 and 24) Students must be available for make-up dates should they be needed.

Enchanted Entertainers: an Introduction to Play-Acting (ages 5-7)

Wednesdays, 4:30pm to 5:45pm

In this drama class, students will be introduced to a genre of children’s literature such as; fractured fairy tales, Aesop’s fables, fiction and non-fiction stories that will be use to teach educational lessons. Together with their instructor, they will develop their own stage adaptation of these tales that will include acting, movement and music! At the end of this course the students will present this performance for an invited audience. This acting class promises to be fun, exciting and memorable. Students will leave this class with a better understanding of basic performance skills. All students must be available for this showcase, which – barring any weather or emergency cancellations – is March 4, 2020. Any weather or emergency cancellations will result in the scheduling of our make-up dates as needed (March 11 and 18) Students must be available for make-up dates should they be needed.

Budding Actor’s Workshop (ages 5-7)

Saturdays, 1:00pm to 2:15pm

This no-pressure class environment allows students to explore a variety pack of acting tools and techniques for budding young talents including improv, scripted scenes and sketches, on-camera scenes and commercials, without the pressure of putting on a performance! Build confidence, presentation, social and public speaking skills. A performance showcase on our final date, March 14 is optional. As this is primarily a skill-building class, students should not feel pressure to perform, but can if the class so decides.

Broadway Melodies (ages 8-10)

Musical theatre requires performers to not only sing but to act a song as well. Movement and motivation work together in any musical number to help tell the story. Harness these elements and build strong vocal and performance skills as we examine the best of Broadway! Students will learn how to not only sing a musical number, but explore musical staging, stage directions, how to act a song and most importantly how to blend and work together creatively as an ensemble. Acting games and exercises will also be incorporated into the curriculum. The session will culminate in an informal showcase on the final date.  All students must be available for this showcase, which – barring any weather or emergency cancellations – is March 16, 2020. Any weather or emergency cancellations will result in the scheduling of our make-up dates as needed (March 23 and 30) Students must be available for make-up dates should they be needed.

On the Spot: Comedy and Improv for Kids (ages 8-10)

Laughter is something we can all share and enjoy! In this eight-week, no-pressure, workshop, young actors will tap into their own creative ideas and instincts as they explore improv, sketches, physical comedy, parody and joke-telling! They’ll build confidence and teamwork skills as they learn to trust in themselves and their fellow actors, and recognize the difference between appropriate and inappropriate humor. A performance showcase on our final date, March 4, 2020 is optional. As this is primarily a skill-building class, students should not feel pressure to perform, but can if the class so decides.

Challenge your creativity by putting on your own show! In this eight-week workshop, students will learn the process of creative collaboration as they develop their own performance piece to be presented to an audience of family and friends on the final class. Students will work (following a carefully-planned outline) on developing characters and providing creative contributions to their script. All students must be available for this showcase, which – barring any weather or emergency cancellations – is March 14, 2020. Any weather or emergency cancellations will result in the scheduling of our make-up dates as needed (March 21 and 28) Students must be available for make-up dates should they be needed.

Broadway Bound (ages 11-13)

This intensive study in musical performance offers students opportunities for solo work, duets, trios and other small-group features. They’ll explore selections from some of Broadway and Off-Broadway’s best to find two new audition songs (an up-tempo and ballad) to add to their audition repertoire. The class will culminate in a very informal showcase on the final date. All students must be available for this showcase, which – barring any weather or emergency cancellations – is March 12, 2020. Any weather or emergency cancellations will result in the scheduling of our make-up dates as needed (March 19 and 26) Students must be available for make-up dates should they be needed.

Tweens On Screen (ages 11-13)

Different than on-stage acting, acting on screen is very intimate, and the camera picks up every detail. Learn how to best present yourself on-camera and explore auditions, commercials, scenes for TV and film using actual, network and professional scripts. You’ll also pick up useful tips on how to book professional work and industry tricks of the trade! Highlights from the class will be loaded onto a private YouTube Channel for parents to view and for students to download their work.

An Actor’s Breakdown: Scene Study for Teens (ages 14-17)

Instructor: Joey Sanzaro

Wednesdays, 5:00pm to 6:30pm

In this eight-week intensive course, teen actors will build skills and develop a “toolbox” of techniques in how to analyze a scene to find character objectives and obstacles that inform them in making more truthful and specific acting choices. They’ll also learn to become “listening actors” by taking cue off the intensity and inflection of their scene partner(s). Students are welcome to bring in a piece they wish to work on (be it scene or monologue), otherwise, appropriate material will be provided.

Audition Noticed: Getting Yourself Noticed at Professional and College Auditions (ages 14-17)

This class is a focused study in not only how to prepare for professional or college auditions, but how to market, promote and manage yourself as an actor. On top of building and preparing a repertoire of audition pieces (be it monologues, musicals or TV and film), students will explore the kinds of details that will help get their headshots, resumes and submissions noticed and get them through the door. They’ll also be informed in how to work with agents, managers and casting directors.

Off the Cuff: Beginners Adult Comedy and Improv

Improv is unscripted, allowing artists to draw from their own instincts, shed inhibitions, build personal ease and confidence onstage, and develop trust among fellow performers. These skills also apply to social, business, interview/audition and presentation situations. In this eight-week class for beginner students, you’ll develop creative reflexes through a series of theatre games, impromptu scenarios, and character and team-building exercises.

Between the Lines: Scene Study for Adults

Anyone can memorize lines, but an actor has to bring the character to life through “truth.” Learn how to find clues in the text that inform you in making character-driven choices that lead to a more truthful performance, how to play action and intention as opposed to simply emotion how to be an active listener on stage  and how to respond and play off of the intensity of your scene partner your scene partner.
