Our class sessions run once a week for eight weeks. Class offerings are listed below our calendar. Our dance classes specialize in musical theatre styles of dance such as theatre jazz, lyrical movement, and tap. Classes are 55 to 60 minutes. Students can opt to register for the full, eight-week session at a discounted rate, or register on a drop-in (or per-class) basis. Acting and Theatre Craft Classes are only available for registration for the full, eight-week session. Classes vary in times from one hour (Grades K to 2), 75 minutes (Grades  3 to 5), 90 minutes (middle and high school), and sometimes two hours (high school and adults).

Information on our teacher’s backgrounds and credentials is now available within our class descriptions.

All correspondence with parents and students will take place by email. Details regarding drop-off, pick-up, and other class information will be sent to all parents/students at least five days in advance of the start of the class. Please be sure to check your emails on a regular basis for class updates or alerts such as cancellations due to weather or emergency. (This goes for our Adult Classes as well.)

We ask that all rides please be on time for dismissal, as our staff must prepare for the arrival and/or dismissal of other classes at the facility, or prepare the facility for rehearsals or performances, and may not be available to supervise. If an emergency should arise preventing you from reaching the theatre on time for dismissal, or if you do need to arrange for an early drop-off or later pick-up, please contact our Education Director directly at brian@curtaincallinc.com or 203-329-8207 x700. (All Curtain Call office voicemails go straight our email as well.)

If a student needs to miss class for any reason, please try to let us know. Absences can sometimes cause teachers to make adjustment to what they had originally planned for that day. You may contact brian@curtaincallinc.com or 203-329-8207 x700. 

Curtain Call follows the Stamford Public School Calendar as to holidays and weather/emergency closings. Any class cancellations will be posted to the this webpage and on News 12CT, and all parents/students will be notified. Make-up classes are only provided in the event Curtain Call must cancel a class due to weather or emergency. Make-up classes are not provided for individual student absences.

All students should bring their own water bottles to class. Water bottles should be clearly labeled with the student’s name.

NO EATING will be allowed in the theatres, rehearsal studios, backstage or in the dressing rooms at any time. Food may only be eaten outdoors or in the theatre lobbies.

Students should dress comfortably and appropriately for all activities, and must wear the appropriate footwear: NO sandals, flip-flops, open-toed shoes, bare of stocking feet, Crocs or Heelys permitted.

Imagi-Motion: How Actors Use Their Bodies, Grades K to 2  – (NO LONGER AVAILABLE)

This class is a dance/ movement class to help students build confidence in movement and learn how actors can use their bodies to create characters and tell stories. Young performers will build comfort and confidence in learning to use their bodies as acting tools. Acting requires more than words. Actors and dancers use their bodies and facial expressions to inform the audience of what kind of personality they are, and what they are feeling and thinking. Just simply how a character stands or how they walk can tell us an awful lot about them. (A giant would move very differently than a mouse, for example.) In this class, students will use music and movement exercises, and choreography to get in tune with their bodies creatively, and explore how body language, posture, gesture and facial expression can be used as effectively as a costume in order to create a character. They will also use masks and work with props.

Music Box Theatre: An Introduction to Musical Theatre, Grades K to 2 – (NO LONGER AVAILABLE)

This class will develop a mini-musical culminating in a performance on the final date for family and friends that includes minor set pieces, costumes, props , and stage lighting. A favorite of students grades K to 2 for many years, our Music Box Theatre class is expanding this year, with a pair of teachers working together as director and music director to provide more one-on-one focus and attention to students, create more challenging and creative staging, and add a bit more production value (minor set pieces, props, costumes, and stage lighting), so students have a better sense of what the experience of “putting on a show” may be like. Using song, character expression and choreographed movements and gestures as storytelling tools, students will assemble a mini-musical based upon a story or fable that they will perform for families on the final class.  A new mini-musical is explored each session for recurring students. This fall’s selection is entitled, A Three Piggy “Opera,” (which is a comical reference to the Broadway musical title, A Three Penny Opera). Students will be cast in various roles and provided with a script and recorded music tracks. The class will also include special craft projects which will be incorporated into their performance. All students must be available for their performance on the final date (November 14).

Budding Actor’s Workshop: A Variety-Pack of Acting Skills, Grades K to 2

This low-pressure class environment allows students to explore a variety pack of acting tools and techniques for budding young talents including improv, character creation, scripted scenes/sketches and commercials, without the pressure of rehearsing and preparation associated with putting on a show. A new topic will be explored every two weeks. Build confidence, presentation, social and public speaking skills. Highlights of the students’ work have often been presented in an informal showcase for an invited audience at the end of the session if the class is comfortable.

Stage-a-Story: An Introduction to Play-Acting, Grades K to 2

Instructor: Josh Elliott Pickel

This class will develop a stage play (based on a book, fable, or piece of children’s literature) culminating in a performance on the final date for family and friends that includes minor set pieces, costumes, props, and stage lighting. In this drama class, students will develop stage adaptations such as fractured fairy tales, Aesop’s fables, fiction, and non-fiction stories that will be used to teach educational lessons. (A new adaptation is explored each session for recurring students. This fall’s selection is TBD.) Together, they will learn basic stage skills and direction, explore character development, creative use of movement, develop stage-speaking skills, and build confidence! At the end of this course the students will present this performance for an invited audience (with costumes, props, minor set pieces, and stage lighting). This acting class promises to be fun, exciting and memorable. All students must be available for the showcase performance on the final date (November 18).

How Do I Prepare for Auditions? Grades 3 to 6 – (NO LONGER AVAILABLE)

This class is a skill-building and confidence-boosting class in how to prepare for various auditions: singing, acting, and dance. Does your child wish to audition for the next big show, but lacks confidence or isn’t sure how to properly prepare for what’s expected? This workshop is designed to help! Students will build confidence in their skills and how to present themselves. They’ll learn how to pick the right song for themselves (that showcases their vocal and acting ability), and exactly what 32 bars of that song to audition with. They’ll also build confidence in tackling cold readings from scripts, as well as dance auditions. By the end of our eighth week, students will learn that auditions are not meant to be intimidating, but an opportunity for hopeful actors to shine!

This class will develop a mini-musical culminating in a performance on the final date for family and friends that includes minor set pieces, costumes, props , and stage lighting. Under the direction of a pair of instructors, one serving as music director, the other as stage director, this class will develop a mini-musical performance for the final date, focusing on strengthening and enhancing vocal as well as acting skills, character development, understanding plot and conflict, character objectives and obstacles, staging and movement, and how musical numbers help to drive the storyline. Their performance will include minor set pieces, props, costumes, and stage lighting. (A new mini-musical is explored each session for recurring students. This fall’s selection is TBD.) All students must be available for their performance on the final date (November 14).

Kids On-Camera, Grades 3 to 5

This is a skill-building and confidence-boosting class in how to act on camera. Acting on-camera is very different than acting onstage. On stage, actors must be “larger than life” so they can be seen and heard all the way from the back of the theatre or in the balcony. Acting for the camera comes closer to reality than acting on stage, and is more intimate. The camera can zoom in as closely or intently as needed, and hones in on what exactly the audience should see. Learn how to best present yourself on-camera and explore auditions, commercials, scenes for TV and film using actual, network and professional scripts. You’ll also pick up useful tips on how to book professional work and industry tricks of the trade! Clips of the students’ work will be saved to a Google Classroom Drive and made available for parents following the end of the session.

Broadway Bound: Triple Threat Workshop, Grades 8 to 10

This is a skill-building and confidence-boosting class in strengthening skills for musical theatre performance: vocal, dance, and acting. This intensive study will focus in voice, dance, and acting for musical theatre performance, building and enhancing skills and confidence in each as well as helping students prepare for musical theatre auditions. With their instructors, they will develop pieces (an up-tempo song, a ballad, and monologue) to add to their audition repertoire, tackle choreography and handling dance auditions, and learn how to present themselves with confidence. The class will culminate in a very informal showcase on the final date, 11/14.

Long-Form Improv & Sketch for Teens, Grades 9 to 12 – (NO LONGER AVAILABLE)

This is a skill-building and confidence-boosting class in Long-Form Improv, a variety of  improv different from your “Who’s Line Is It Anyway” form of games based on audience suggestions. Long-form is used to help create sustainable characters, develop sketches (like SNL and UCB) and scripts. Ready to dive into long-form improv? Always wanted to be on an improv team? Or start one of your own? Long-form improv involves creating a continuous improvised piece (or series of pieces) inspired or based off a suggestion or idea. This advanced improv class will go beyond the basics of scene work and give you the tools to create 20 minute improv sets as a group. We’ll utilize structures such as The Harold to create the magic of a long-form improv set that leaves an audience thinking, “I can’t believe they made that up on the spot!” Students will work as a team to listen, build trust, get creative, and most of all – let loose and have fun! This class will also include lessons in developing and writing sketch. Ever wonder how the team at SNL dreams up their wackiest and funniest sketches? We’ll recreate a writer’s room right here at Curtain Call! You’ll learn everything from pitches, sketch structure and punch-ups, to creating original character scripts.

Teen Writers Workshop, Grades 9 to 12 – (NO LONGER AVAILABLE)

This class is an exploratory workshop for both new and experienced script writers. Bring your ideas to the page! Explore the process of developing a script from thesis statement to final draft: creating a thesis that will get your script boldly started, developing characters, dialogue, conflict, dramatic tension, setting up humor and timing, and providing actors with a clear storyline and path to follow. Laptops or other electronic devices will be used for those who have them available, and scripts will be shared using a classroom drive. (For those without laptops or devices, Curtain Call does have a number of laptops available for student use in the classroom.) Students will also have the opportunity to hear their pieces read in class, and engage in constructive and productive feedback. The final class will culminate in an informal reading of student work for family, friends, and invited guests.

Designed for actors who may not necessarily be trained dancers but are looking to improve their dance skills for musical theatre performance and auditions, this class will lay a foundation of technique while providing a fun and exciting classroom environment that will help you develop comfort and confidence.

Adult Writers Workshop – (NO LONGER AVAILABLE)

This class is an exploratory workshop for both new and experienced script writers. Bring your ideas to the page! Explore the process of developing a script from thesis statement to final draft: creating a thesis that will get your script boldly started, developing characters, dialogue, conflict, dramatic tension, setting up humor and timing, and providing actors with a clear storyline and path to follow. Laptops or other electronic devices will be used for those who have them available, and scripts will be shared using a classroom drive. (For those without laptops or devices, Curtain Call does have a number of laptops available for student use in the classroom.) Students will also have the opportunity to hear their pieces read in class, and engage in constructive and productive feedback. The final class will culminate in a reading of student work for family, friends, and invited guests.

Measure for Measure: A Song Study Workshop for Adults

This is a skill-building and confidence-boosting class in strengthening vocal technique for musical performance, and also how to break down a song as an actor. Strengthen vocal technique and breakdown songs to explore both their technical and storytelling components. Learn to interpret the underlying and hidden clues in songs that lead us to discovering character, objective, conflict, and emotionality, and develop pieces you can use for auditions, concerts, or cabaret performances. Students are welcome to bring in songs they are already working on or new songs they are interested in exploring. Song resources will also be made available to students.

Off the Cuff: Short-Form Adult Improv

This is a skill-building and confidence-boosting class in Short-Form Improv, a variety of  improv usually based in games or short scenes based on a pred-determined structure or audience suggestion. This is a skill-building and confidence-boosting class which helps to shed inhibitions, instill confidence in one’s own creative ideas and contributions, and helps enhance teamwork and problem-solving skills. Improv is unscripted, allowing artists to draw from their own instincts, shed their inhibitions, and build confidence and ease onstage. It also allows them to build trust among their fellow performers, commit to the given circumstance of a scene or situation, build upon their ideas, and bring freshness, adaptability and spontaneity in their performance. These skills also apply to social, presentational, interview, and business situations. “Short-form” improv consists of short scenes usually constructed from a predetermined game, structure, or idea and driven by an audience suggestion. In this eight-week class, you’ll develop quick and creative reflexes through a series of theatre games, impromptu scenarios, and character and team-building exercises.

Long-Form Improv & Sketch for Adults

This is a skill-building and confidence-boosting class in Long-Form Improv, a variety of  improv different from your “Who’s Line Is It Anyway” form of games based on audience suggestions. Long-form is used to help create sustainable characters, develop sketches (like SNL and UCB) and scripts. Ready to dive into long-form improv? Always wanted to be on an improv team? Or start one of your own? Long-form improv involves creating a continuous improvised piece (or series of pieces) inspired or based off a suggestion or idea. This advanced improv class will go beyond the basics of scene work and give you the tools to create 20 minute improv sets as a group. We’ll utilize structures such as The Harold to create the magic of a long-form improv set that leaves an audience thinking, “I can’t believe they made that up on the spot!” Students will work as a team to listen, build trust, get creative, and most of all – let loose and have fun! This class will also include lessons in developing and writing sketch. Ever wonder how the team at SNL dreams up their wackiest and funniest sketches? We’ll recreate a writer’s room right here at Curtain Call! You’ll learn everything from pitches, sketch structure and punch-ups, to creating original character scripts.
