Through rotating study in Improv, Shakespeare and Modern Acting in age-appropriate groups (5th and 6th grade, 7th and 8th grade, high school), students will tap into their own creativity to assemble a showcase performance on the final date drawing upon the instincts, teamwork and timing built in Improv, the technique and discipline developed in Modern Acting and the power tapped through Shakespeare’s language.

Music Box Theatre: an Introduction to Musical Theatre (ages 5-7)

Using song and movement as storytelling tools, students learn the basics of musical theatre performance as they prepare and perform a mini-musical for an invited audience on the final class! As an ensemble, they will learn stage direction, vocalization exercises and most importantly, how music can help to move or drive a story. In this drama class, students will be introduced to a genre of children’s literature such as; fractured fairy tales, Aesop’s fables, fiction and non-fiction stories that will be use to teach educational lessons. Together with their instructor, they will develop their own stage adaptation of these tales that will include acting, movement and music! At the end of this course the students will present this performance for an invited audience. This acting class promises to be fun, exciting and memorable. Students will leave this class with a better understanding of basic performance skills. All students must be available for this showcase, which – barring any weather or emergency cancellations – is March 4, 2020. Musical theatre requires performers to not only sing but to act a song as well. Movement and motivation work together in any musical number to help tell the story. Harness these elements and build strong vocal and performance skills as we examine the best of Broadway! Different than on-stage acting, acting on screen is very intimate, and the camera picks up every detail. Learn how to best present yourself on-camera and explore auditions, commercials, scenes for TV and film using actual, network and professional scripts. This class is a focused study in not only how to prepare for professional or college auditions, but how to market, promote and manage yourself as an actor. On top of building and preparing a repertoire of audition pieces (be it monologues, musicals or TV and film), students will explore the kinds of details that will help get their headshots, resumes and submissions noticed and get them through the door. They’ll also be informed in how to work with agents, managers and casting directors.
