Curtain Call’s Summerstock and Summerstock Junior are full-day, conservatory-style workshop programs in dramatic and musical theatre arts. Students hone creative, collaborative and social skills as well as performance skills. Each session runs two weeks and accommodates a maximum of 40 students. Those students are then placed in age-appropriate groups for a rotating schedule of study in a variety of performance subjects under a team of specialized instructors. For example:

Group C |

Class 2 |

Class 3 |

(See the session descriptions below for what specific areas of study each session explores).
Class work is highlighted in a student showcase at the end of each session. A lunch and snack break will be part of the daily schedule. Lunch will normally take place on the playground and picnic area of the Sterling Farms property, weather permitting, or in our Dressing Room Theatre where tables are available for seating. Students should bring their own lunch and snacks in a bag or lunch box, as well as a water bottle, clearly labeled with their name. Please avoid packing any nut-related items as a number of students (and sometimes staff) often suffer from nut-related allergies.
ALL CORRESPONDENCE WITH PARENTS WILL TAKE PLACE BY EMAIL. Once you have registered, you will receive an automated confirmation from our online system. Further information and any necessary forms (waivers, photo releases and emergency/medical forms) will be sent via email at least two weeks prior to the start of the session (if not sooner). If you do have questions in the meantime, please contact Education Director Brian Bianco at brian@curtaincallinc.com or 203-329-8207 (x700).
Sibling Discounts and Payment Plan Options are available. Scholarships are available for students in need. Details on how to apply as well as information on our staff’s backgrounds can be found in the sidebar to the right if you are on your computer or tablet (or to the bottom if you are on your phone).

Acting on-camera is very different than acting onstage. On stage, actors must be “larger than life” so they can be seen and heard all the way from the back of the theatre or in the balcony. Acting for the camera comes closer to reality than acting on stage, and is more intimate. The camera can zoom in as closely or intently as needed, and hones in on what exactly the audience should see. Learn how to best present yourself on-camera and explore auditions, commercials, scenes for TV and film using actual, network and professional scripts. You’ll also pick up useful tips on how to book professional work and industry tricks of the trade!

These skills also apply to social, presentational, interview, and business situations. Young actors will build comfort and confidence in learning to use their bodies as acting tools. Acting requires more than words. Actors use their bodies and facial expressions to inform the audience of what kind of personality they are, and what they are feeling and thinking. Just simply how a character stands or how they walk can tell us an awful lot about them. (A giant would move very differently than a mouse, for example.) In this class, students will use music and movement exercises to get in tune with their bodies creatively, and explore how body language, posture, gesture and facial expression can be used as effectively as a costume in order to create a character. They will also use masks and work with props.

Writing the sort of content you see from Saturday Night Live or Key and Peele is about more than simply doing something funny for the sake of being funny. Solid writing always comes from forming a strong central idea, then utilizing humor to explain your idea to the audience. The same applies to dramatic forms of writing: each scene of a play must center around a strong idea around which all dialogue and character choices are built. In this class, learners will identify themes that they are passionate about, format a strong thesis about those themes, then evolve those thesis statements into an original piece of writing where their unique creative voices shine. By the end of this class, you will not only present hilarious content to your audience, but you will identify who you are as a storyteller and deliver comedy that speaks to your audience in the unique way of which only you are capable.

Anyone can memorize lines, but an actor has to bring their character and dialogue to life through “truth.” How does an actor approach a scene and how do they recreate, process and control emotion? How do proper breath support, body language, physicalization of character and intention play a role in the success of an actor’s performance? How do they discover, process and respond to what is in the scene around them, and how do they convey their objectives and obstacles to the audience? Learn how to find clues in the text that relate to who your character is as a person, their objectives and obstacles, and how to make character-driven choices that lead you to a more truthful performance. Explore techniques that push you to greater heights, build confidence, help you become a stronger scene partner, and a better-rounded performer.

Teen Scene and Sketch Writing, Grades 9 to 12February 4, 2023 – Teen Scene and Sketch Writing, Grades 9 to 12 (This class is no longer available.)Instructor: Joseph Riedel (Click here for Joseph's Bio) Saturdays, 10:00am to 11:30am 1/21, 1/28, 2/4, 2/11, 2/25, ¾, 3/11, 3/18 *No class 2/18 (President’s Day Weekend) **Make-Up Dates (in case of weather-related closings): 3/25, 4/1 Writing the sort of content you see from Saturday Night Live or Key and Peele is about more than simply doing something funny for the sake of being funny.
