BUS STOP is set in a Kansas diner in 1955. The diner plays host to a handful of bus passengers stranded by a winter storm. Inge tells five sometimes humorous, always poignant stories of different kinds of love. Bo Decker, a young rancher and rodeo rider, fiercely pursues Cherie, an unwilling sexy chanteuse, because he has "been familiar" with her. The owner of the diner, Grace, just wants a good man with no strings. Carl, the bus driver, fills this simple need. And Elma a scholarly, romantic schoolgirl on the cusp of womanhood, yearns for her first love. She is seduced, momentarily, by the charming Dr. Lyman, a failed university professor whose loneliness has turned him dark and despairing. Also stranded is Bo’s friend and mentor Virgil, who represents genuine and selfless sacrifice. His devotion to Bo is so sincere that he willingly passed up his own opportunity to have a home. And the Will the sheriff, can continually be relied upon to bring a firm and gentle hand and peace to all who come into his jurisdiction. All come to find shelter from the night’s storm, but by the morning light, they have been exposed to their own sharp needs. Some things change; some things just stay the same.
The playwright merges several powerful story lines, all revealing themselves in a mix of romance, drama, comedy and farce, but without pretense and with a deeply felt affection for his audience. The story is based loosely on actual events observed by the author.
