Directors are storytellers using visuals, design, movement and even other artists as their medium. But how do they create a concept or vision that enhances and supports the story and not overshadow it? How do they collaborate and communicate with actors, technicians, designers, music directors, choreographers, etc.? What do they need to know about what happens behind the scenes in order for what’s onstage to happen? In this eight week course, students will explore how to develop a production concept, how to create interesting stage movement and visuals to tell a story, how to communicate and collaborate with other artists with specificity and even get to do some work hands-on scene directing.
This low-pressure class environment allows students to explore a variety pack of acting tools and techniques for budding young talents including improv, character creation, scripted scenes/sketches, monologues, and commercials, without the pressure of rehearsing and preparation associated with putting on a show. Build confidence, presentation, social and public speaking skills. Highlights of the students’ work have often been presented in a showcase for an invited audience at the end of the session if the class is comfortable.

It also allows them to build trust among their fellow performers, commit to the given circumstance of a scene or situation and build upon those ideas, and also brings freshness, adaptability and spontaneity to an actor’s performance. These skills also apply to social, presentational, interview, and business situations. In this eight-week class, you’ll develop creative reflexes through a series of theatre games, impromptu scenarios, and character and team-building exercises.
Playwrights provide clues in their scripts for actors that provide them with an outline of who their character is, what their relationship is with other characters on stage, what their goal (or objective) may be, how urgent is that goal or objective, and what may stand in their way (their obstacle). Learn how to find these clues and make character-driven choices that lead you to a more truthful performance. Learn also how to be an active listener and pass the ball to your scene partner and feed off each other’s energy while still staying “in the moment.”Students will work with age-appropriate scripts and are welcome and encouraged to bring in any monologues or scenes from home they may wish to work on.
